Mahatma Gandhi's Glimpses of Religion

Gandhi was not a too religious man for him religion means self-realization or knowledge of self. Gandhi did not like Hindu's glitter and pomp and practice of immorality make him dislike but soon when he was thirteen starting liking Ramayana, after listening from a great devotee of Rama.

Gandhi had fear of ghosts and his fear was known to one of his servants Rambha, She advises or told Gandhi to recall Ramanama as a remedy. This sowed a seed of faith in Ram Naam in Gandhi. Gandhi falls in love with Geeta after listen to the reading Geeta by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in his twenty-one. Gandhi believes Ramayana of Tulasidas as the greatest book in all devotional literature and Geeta was his daily companion.

Gandhi's father has friends of all religions except Christian so he has faiths in all religions. He hated Christian because in his School Christian abused Hindu, Hindu gods, and the practice of eating beef having liquor made him hate Cristian but later he thinks out of the box and converts that hate into love and faith in Christian too.

Gandhi also has read Manusmriti, He said that Manusmriti has lines that justify meat-eating and killing insects and other animals for food. He adds Manusmriti at any rate did not teach him Ahimsa. Bapu love to read Geeta, He read it daily. Some line of Geeta that was close to Mahatma Gandhi is "For a bowl of water give a goodly meal, For a kindly greeting bow thou down with zeal, For a simple penny pay thou back with gold. It thy life be rescued, life does not withhold. Thus the words and actions of the wise regard. Every little service tenfold they reward. But the truly noble know all men as one. And return with gladness good for evil done."
