Mahatma Gandhi Birth and parentage

Mohan das Karam Chand Gandhi was born on 2 Oct 1869 in Porbandar(Sudamapuri), passed his childhood in Porbandar. Ota Gandhi his grandfather had 6 kids, 4 from 1st wife and 2 from 2nd one. He was prime minister in several khatiwad states. Kaba Gandhi father of Gandhi had also 6 kids(two daughters from 1st and 2nd wife and the rest of all children from the last wife) and he had married 4 women. Out of four, 3 died and the last one Putlibai was the mother of Gandhi. Gandhi was not sure about why his father had married four times but he believes that his father married four times for his carnal pleasures. In this very introductory part, Gandhi has merely told about his habits and personality of his father, like my father was truthful, brave, and, generous.

The impression of his mother left on his memory was saintliness. She was deeply religious and adamant about her vow. She would not think of taking her meals without her daily prayers. She never missed her Chaturmas and Chandrayana no matter how ill she is, Even after an illness she never excuse for relaxing.

I think the motivation, inspiration, and patient of Gandhi long fast is come from his mother.


Word Meanings

  1. Chaturmas  =>  A vow of fasting and semi-fasting during the four months of the rains. The period of short of long lent.

  2. Chandrayana => A sort of fast in which the daily quantity of food is increased or diminished according to as the moon waxes or wanes.

  3. Carnal => Relating to body and flesh.
      4. Adamant => Very hard

      5. Fugitive => Someone tries to elude justice or run away.

      6. Depriving => Take away.

      7. Sluggish => Slow and apathetic.
